19th IRIGC M&M-TC meeting under ‘Make-in-India’ initiative



The Defence Minister of India Rajnath Singh and his Russian counterpart General Sergey Shoigu jointly chaired the 19th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military and Military-Technical Cooperation (IRIGC-M&MTC) meeting in Moscow on 6th November 2019. Inspecting the Guard of Honour, Rajnath Singh was warmly welcomed at the Russian Defence Ministry in Central Moscow and there India was termed as the Exclusive Strategic Defence Partner. In the meeting, Rajnath Singh insisted on the importance of the Inter-Governmental Agreement on the manufacturing of spares, components, and aggregates in India through joint ventures that would reduce cost, timelines of supply and result in progressive indigenization as this agreement will boost the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The meeting also included a serious in-depth discussion about the international issues with common concerns including the operations acting upon Syria by Russia. The Russian Defence Minister affirmed to operationalize the joint venture; lndo-Russia Rifles Private Limited for the manufacture of world-class Kalashnikov AK 203 rifles in India as soon as possible and they also assured robust Russian participation in DefExpo 2020, to be held in Uttar Pradesh capital Lucknow from 5th to 8th February 2020. To strengthen the military training ties between the two nations, Russia assured to depute an officer for the prestigious National Defence College (NDC) course in New Delhi, commencing 2020.

19th Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) meeting in Abu Dhabi, UAE



The Ministers of 22 countries attended the 19th Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) meeting held in Abu Dhabi, UAE, on 7th November 2019. The Chairmanship of IORA has been passed from the Republic of South Africa who held the chair between the period 2017 to 2019 to UAE assisted by Bangladesh. This time the theme for the meeting was “Promoting a shared destiny and path to prosperity in Indian ocean” and 21st Committee of Senior Officials (CSO) preceded the meeting focusing on growth, sustained development and economic cooperation in the IORA region. IORA is a broad platform that connects the world’s most dynamic regions of the south, west and southeast Asia, Africa and Oceania through seas and it is said that India is the largest contributor to IORA special funds; recent contribution was 1 Million USD.

BIMSTEC Conclave going to be held in Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh



Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh to hold the Bay of Bengal initiative multi-sector technical and economic cooperation (BIMSTEC) conclave for two days on 7th and 8th November 2019. Vizag port trust will be hosting the meeting this time for the first time since BIMSTEC was formed in 1997 and this time Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Srilanka, Thailand, Nepal, Bhutan (7 member countries) will be participating in the conference. India’s Union Minister of State for Shipping, Mansukh L. Mandaviya will be inaugurating the meeting and the focusing points to be discussed in the meeting will be as follows :

Sharing experiences in increasing productivity.

Sharing experiences availing investment opportunities.

Development of free trade zones.

Development of tourism.

Measures required for safety and security.
